Prayers to St. Philomena

Prayers to St. Philomena

The Novena is a powerful means to obtain graces and heavenly favours. Devotees can recite Novenas composed by Don Francesco De Lucia, by Saint John Marie Vianney, Cure of Ars, or the Litanies for nine consecutive days. When the intention is very important during the Novena it is appropriate to participate every day in the Holy Mass. Marvellous spiritual results can be equally achieved having a Novena of Holy Masses celebrated at the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale. Many devotees living abroad, who are unable to visit the Sanctuary, send in their Prayer Petitions which are laid down with care at the Altar of our young Martyr, the great Saint Philomena.

Prayers to St. Philomena

Novena in honour of Saint Philomena V.M.

by Don Francis De Lucia,

First Rector of the Sanctuary of St. Philomena, Italy

(translated from antique Italian and taken from his book)

This should be devoutly recited to prepare for her Feast and to obtain the desired graces.

I

Supplication

Purest Young Virgin, most faithful disciple of the Gospel and very powerful Martyr of Jesus Christ, You, who were full of grace and purity, enriched with faith and power in a faithless and corrupted world, and especially in Rome, where the throne of idolatry, tyranny, and every infernal superstition, and the cradle of all the most deforming vices could be found, this idolatrous city was nothing else but a horrible Babylon of prostitution; and you in the center of the capital of the pagan and corrupted world, managed to keep yourself strong in the faith, and pure for your heavenly Spouse until the last breath of your life was sacrificed for the many atrocious martyrdoms; we pray to you for all of your highest merits to implore for us from the throne of the merciful heavenly Father the gift of perseverance of faith, and purity of mind and body, and to let us die with the grace of Jesus Christ. So be it.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Creed.

II

Supplication

Very powerful Martyr, and most faithful Virgin of Jesus Christ, in order to preserve intact and immaculate the treasure of purity and faith for our God, accepted to be drowned in deep waters with anchor tied around your neck till suffocated, you were freed by heavenly Spouse: we humbly ask your intercession, so that in times of deep suffering, sorrow, and anxiety that continuously surround us, we be strong, and freed from the guilt of our faults, freed from the death of our souls, and avoid being drowned in the waters of temptations. So be it.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Creed.

III

Supplication

Beloved Bride, and resolute Martyr of Jesus Christ, You that in order to remain permanently virgin and strong in the faith, accepted to be exposed to the eyes of many filthy and wicked pagans in the idolatrous Rome, and in order to defend the virginity and doctrine of the Gospel renounced the delights of the flesh, the pleasures and the pomp of the world, the life of your own perfectly pure body, and exposed yourself to the flogging of leather and metal rings, and so under deluge of cruel lashings you were covered in sores and blood, and became very similar to your divine Loved one; implore for us miserable sinners, the necessary strength to live far from the stain of sins, and to die constant in the faith of the Roman Church, like You, no matter the pain, dishonour and even death itself. So be it.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Creed.

IV

Supplication

Zealous warrior for virginity and faith of Jesus Christ, for the unconquerable and cheerful firmness that you showed by exposing your virginal body three times in Rome to hold fast to the Doctrine of Jesus Christ and true to your purity, you accepted to be pierced by sharp and cruel arrows. In this way you gained many palms and decorations, as many as the mortal wounds that you bore for your Heavenly Spouse: grant us fragile observers of the divine law the strength necessary for our eternal wellbeing, so that with holy patience we tolerate all the suffering and grief of this life, and all the infernal arrows and darts fired against our souls by the temptations of the devil. Amen

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be and Creed.

Final Prayer

Illustrious and Glorious Martyr and Bride of Christ your Heavenly Beloved was not satisfied with the atrocious martyrization that you had to endure so he did not allow death to extinguish your precious life in order that you could continue your sufferings and bitter fight amidst wounds, blood and pain and so by keeping you alive you were ready for fierce attacks and terrifying provocations to grant you more immortal victories, palms, triumphs and wreaths. In this way He made you a more admirable bride before the angels in the Kingdom of his Glory and more distinguished among crowned and triumphant martyrs. For this Heavenly Council you were put in chain and were dragged in front of the tyrants of Rome to be tempted yet again against purity and faith; your inhuman enemies in desperation to bring your pure and faithful heart under submission, condemned you to be beheaded and so, covered in garlands and graces you were taken glorious and triumphant into the reign of your Spouse.

In this Holy Novena we implore you to gaze on us from the greatness of your heart, console us with a sign that you have accepted our humble homage which we have offered you, and grant us the graces for which we ask, only if they will help us in our eternal life, and any other graces which from Heaven you think we may need to free our souls from eternal death, even though we deserve it for all our grave sins. We hope to be consoled by your celestial charity. We bless with profound devotion the holy trinity who on this earth preceded you with blessings of purity, faith, perseverance and of many others that made your life so holy on earth and glorious in heaven where you were taken victorious and triumphant against atrocious enemies and amongst many trials, helping you with His gifts we thank the Immaculate Virgin Mother of Jesus Christ, Queen and Comfort of Martyrs who with her maternal and powerful assistance allowed you to overcome all your mortal torments. This we hope with the veneration of your merits and the joyful remembrance of your triumphs. Amen

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Creed.

Novena Prayer To Saint Philomena

O faithful virgin and glorious martyr, St Philomena, who works so many miracles on behalf of the poor and sorrowful, have pity on me. Thou knowest the multitude and diversity of my needs. Behold me at thy feet, full of misery, but full of hope. I entreat thy charity oh great Saint. Graciously hear me and obtain from God a favourable answer to the request which I now humbly lay before you (here specify your petition). I am firmly convinced that through thy merits, through the scorn, the sufferings and the death thou didst endure, united to the merits of the Passion and Death of Jesus thy Spouse, I shall obtain what I ask of thee and in the joy of my heart I will bless God, who is admirable in His saints. Amen

Novena in Honor of Saint Philomena Virgin and Martyr

composed by Saint John Maria Vianney Curé of Ars

PRAYER (to be recited every day of the novena)

Glorious Virgin and Martyr greatly loved by God, Saint Philomena, I rejoice with you for the power that God has given you for the glory of His name, for the building of His church and to honour the merits of your life and your death. I delight in seeing you so pure, so generous, so faithful to Jesus Christ and to his Gospel, so magnificently rewarded in heaven and on earth, drawn by your example to practice virtue, full of hope because of all the rewards conceded to your merits I propose to imitate you by avoiding sin and obeying God completely. Help me oh Great Saint by your powerful intercession. Grant me above all an inviolable purity for ever, an indomitable spirit against all evil, the generosity to deny nothing to deny no sacrifice to God and a love as strong as death for the faith of Jesus Christ for the holy Roman Catholic Church and for the Pope, the Father of all the faithful, Shepherd of shepherds and of sheep, vicar of Jesus Christ throughout the world, to these graces that I now ask for with all the ardour of my soul oh Saint Philomena, I add even more graces, which I am confident that through your powerful intersession will be granted me.

(State with simplicity, trust and humility the graces that you desire from the Saint)

Know, the good God for whom you shed your blood and gave your life, the good God who is so lavish with you, and through you of his gifts and favours the good God who loved me so much as to die for me, and who gives himself to me through the Eucharist, no, he will not say no to your prayers to my wishes, he surely feels the need to help us. I fervently hope so; I put all my trust in him and in you.

Amen.

FIRST DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena was a virgin. A virgin in this world… a virgin despite persecution… a virgin until death. What an example! What is the reason of my confusion? What is the remedy?

2. Humiliate yourself often for what has caused you shame, pondering on her virginal purity.

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

SECOND DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena was and remained a virgin… because she repressed the corrupt desires of the flesh…, she retained the modesty of Jesus Christ, she avoided the deceiving world and dangerous occasions. Do you imitate here in all these ways? What are the causes of your temptations…of your weaknesses… of your unease…of your downfall? Try to eliminate them.

2. Shun what has harmed you; practice what you have neglected to do in regard to chastity.

THIRD DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena maintained and increased her love for virginity with prayer, a great source of spiritual life; with the sacraments; the soul is washed with the blood of Christ, and is nourished with his sacred body, divine origin of Christian virginity considering that her members were the members of Jesus Christ and her body was the temple of the holy spirit. Have you not all these means also? What use do you make of them?

2. Double the fervour of your prayers, every now and then repeat to yourself: my members are those of Jesus Christ the temple of the Holy Spirit

3. (Holy mass etc. as first day)

FOURTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena was a martyr… that she suffered… she suffered a lot… suffered until death, and she showed in these moments of torment and invincible patience…are suffering and patience inseparably connected in you? Do you rarely suffer…suffer very little…never enough to die because of it…where does this weariness come from? Would you not like to make some changes? … in which way would you obtain this?

2. Accept with patience the few discomforts, obstacles and difficulties that it pleases the lord to send you today.

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

FIFTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena was a martyr for Jesus Christ …they wanted for take her faith away…they wanted her to transgress her Baptismal vows…induce her to follow the examples of the idolaters and apostate. What does the devil, the world, the flesh and your heart want from you if not the same unfaithfulness? They are offensive to God… is it not vain fear that makes you betray your faith, stops you from fulfilling your duties? My God what disgraceful laxity! Find the necessary courage…

2. Gain the respect of a fellow human being, say to yourself occasionally it is better to be pleasing to God rather than to a Man.

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

SIXTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena when she died for Jesus Christ followed this rule made by our Savior: “if you do not love me more that your father and your mother, even more than you love yourself then you cannot be my disciple.” She did not hesitate… she sacrificed everything, even though blood and nature made themselves heard. In less difficult situations are we worthy of Jesus Christ? If at times when we have to choose between God and Man, Between Grace and Nature, who do we choose? Oh! Let us in the future respect our dignity as children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ.

2. Let us try today to please only God or other beings, always and solely for God. Keep far from confused affections.

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

SEVENTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena when she died for Jesus Christ had to tolerate the mockery, the abuse of her persecutors, of her executioners and most of the spectators of her torture. She was very generous very constant, very cheerful when publicly declaring her faith… if the world offered you a similar chalice to drink would you have enough courage to devour the jesting’s the scorn the most unjust persecutions,.. can he who is honoured by God be dishonoured? Have no fear…follow your path…it will end with the gaining of eternal glory.

2. Do not allow anger into your heart, if something is said abruptly, coarsely, sharply, insultingly etc…

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

EIGHTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena by dying for love of Jesus Christ entered eternal life full of joy “yes I am certain” she would say form the bottom of her heart ” that the supreme Judge will give me in exchange for the worldly good that I have sacrificed to his love, the Crown of justice that he had promised me.” She dies…and here she is in the tabernacle of God with the Saints to follow the Lamb… are these the thoughts that I try to have when I have to make a sacrifice? What impression do they make on my soul? To which side do the scales tilt? Ah! The Saints to obtain all would say: let us leave all what will I say?

2. Let us decide on a voluntary sacrifice for today…Let us with pleasure fulfil all our duties etc…

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

NINTH DAY

1. Consider that Saint Philomena in this unworthy world sacrificed all for Jesus Christ, receiving in return in this world directly from him a hundred fold of what she had renounced to. What power! What Glory! How much grandeur humiliated at her feet, how many pilgrims at all her sanctuaries. How many festivities in her honour. What tributes of veneration are offered to her, what agitated zeal to collect her relics. In this way God fulfilled his promises. Eh! If only we kept our promises to him with such faithfulness! But by taking away his Glory do we not deprive ourselves of many favours and merits in this world and in the next? So courage … be loyal … so that God will be loyal with you.

2. Today perform and act of mercy in honour of the Saint. Prepare yourself with a good confession to receive Our Lord Jesus Christ worthily.

3. Assist at Holy Mass in her honour and pray to one of her statues or pictures.

PRAYER

Oh God among the miracles of your power you also donated to the weaker sex the victory of martyrdom help us who celebrate the birth of the blessed Philomena your virgin and martyr with her examples to you we come.

Through Christ Our Lord

Amen

Legion of Saint Philomena

The most solid yet least used practice of showing honour and devotion to the saints is that of imitating their virtues, thereby rendering ourselves worthy of their intercession and favours, and of the enjoyment of eternal good. We wish to share in their joy without sharing in their suffering. Being most anxious to interest Saint Philomena in our cause, let us meditate on her life, contemplate her sufferings, and reflect on the heroism of her death. Beg of her the light and grace to apply to our state the virtues which she championed. Let us take courage and uproot from our hearts the vices and defects which oppose her virtues, while practicing the habits which perfect them and for which she is eternally honoured.

First Day

Saint Philomena lived in the world. I also live in the world. Ah, but what a vast difference between my life and her life! She was entirely detached from the world; I am chained to its maxims, its laws, its impure and ridiculous usages. Am I not anxious to please worldlings – to acquire their esteem? Let me resolve then to give up all pleasures which are a danger to my soul, and make the sacrifice today of some lawful pleasure. Prayer*
Prayer for Each Day of the Legion
Hail O holy Saint Philomena, whom God glorifies by so many miracles, whom the Vicar of Jesus Christ has named protectress of the Living Rosary and the Children of Mary, manifest more and more plainly from the heights of Heaven, that a voice holy as thine cannot be denied and that we have the right to rely upon thine aid. Obtain for us the grace to remain faithful to Jesus Christ, even unto death. AMEN.

Second Day

I have a thousand means of sanctification of which Saint Philomena was deprived, in order to render more easy the practice of virtue. Can I bear the comparison between myself and the saint? May God forgive me the abuse of so many graces! How often have I questioned the will of God, His providence, and even His personal love for me? How weak is my faith and absent my trust and confidence in God! How often have I failed to be grateful for His blessings and His favours? Saint Philomena, obtain for me the singular grace to have absolute trust in God. Let me resolve today and every day to thank God over and over for the small details of life. Prayer*

Third Day

Saint Philomena made a vow of virginity. She annihilated the pleasures of the flesh and the hopes that flatter. This vow stripped life of its brightest jewel for her, a royal crown. “But what does it matter,” she reflected, “the whole world is nothing compared to one degree of perfection that my soul will attain through this sacrifice. It is better always to belong entirely to God.” What generosity, what sacrifice, what nobleness of sentiment! Do I realize the valuable treasure of purity? Am I still a virgin? There are so many enemies of this virtue, visible and invisible, that seek to deprive me of it. Have I made for it a rampart by humility, by modesty, by prayer, and by frequenting the Sacraments? If I have entered the sacred union of marriage, have I due respect for the august elevation of this sacrament? Today I will redouble my watchfulness of this virtue through modesty of dress and custody of eyes. I will offer three Hail Mary’s and ask Our Lady to keep me pure in body, heart, and soul. I will examine my wardrobe for any fashions which offend against this virtue for which Saint Philomena gave her life. Prayer*

Fourth Day

Saint Philomena renounced the most attractive advantages of the world. She truly comprehended the words of Solomon, “Vanity of vanities”. Not satisfied with comprehending it, she reduced it to practice at the most difficult but most glorious moment of her life. My God! How she confounds the maxims of the world. By sacrificing all, Saint Philomena obtained EVERYTHING! How miserable I am. By seeking after all, I have deprived myself of the good things which alone deserve to be esteemed. I have believed that world, poor as it is, has wherewithal to enrich those who serve it and that its ignominy can lead me to honour. I have believed that satisfying my senses can bring me true happiness. Foolish being!

My error exposes me to the greatest danger, for is it not written that the friends of the world are the enemies of God? It is time to change my dark vision and see the world for what it is, to use it as if I use it not, to despise what it esteems, and attach myself to nothing it loves. Forgive me, 0 my God, my past folly! Help me, Saint Philomena, to rectify my judgment, to break off my attachments and even to consent, cheerfully, to sacrifice everything, if God should be pleased to demand so much from me. Practice today patience in all that frustrates your desires and disrupts your schedule. Take a minute to help someone in need.

Prayer*

Fifth Day

Saint Philomena suffered cruel torments for God. She was young, delicate, of royal blood and exempt from suffering of any kind. She had only to conceal her religion and break a vow made in youth in order to preserve her life and be protected from the rage of Dioclesian; her life, that of her parents and their kingdom would have been spared through this denial of God. What do I think of heroism like hers? Have I even a germ of it in my heart? Perhaps I am obedient to God now because it costs me little. When the price I must pay for this obedience becomes great, will I rationalize by creating a delusion that I can compromise? And can I really believe that conducting myself in this manner, I shall come to a happy end? Such a thing is impossible. If I am a Christian, I must appear so; and I can neither be or appear to be a Christian, if I do not faithfully follow Jesus Christ, bearing my cross as He carried His Let me then willingly suffer; let me fulfil my daily duties no matter how disagreeable they may be; let me trample on human ~ considerations; let me show myself always and in every place, a generous and faithful Child of Mary! Today I will make a public profession of my faith by doing one or all of the following; openly making the Sign of the Cross, speaking of God to a stranger or a friend, visiting and praying with the sick, wearing openly and devoutly my Holy Rosary, a chain or Crucifix. Grant me, 0 my God, I beseech Thee, through the merits of Saint Philomena, the grace to accomplish my resolution. Prayer*

Prayer*

Sixth Day

Philomena remained unshaken under the fiercest tortures. Many begin but do not persevere. Saint Philomena pursued her course to its termination. She had no concern for self, no hesitation; she had neither regret, complaint or reproach. It was the fiat, “Let it be done,” of Our Lady at the Annunciation and her Saviour in the Garden of Olives. This it was that secured forever her election and her vocation. Am I constant in my plans of sanctification, or am I of the number that live an hour for God and a day for the world and myself? If I do not persevere my combats will be not followed with victory. A thousand times I have begun with the spirit, and as often ended with the flesh. The moment I bid adieu to the world, I have stretched out to it again my hand; and almost as soon as I have trampled on its vanities, I have bound myself again in its chains. Deplorable inconsistency! Worthless desire! 0 my God, remove from me this fickleness of heart. Saint Philomena, obtain for me perseverance in good. Today I will make a resolution to refrain from one word of complaint about anything or any one. I also resolve to find something good to say of one whom I have injured in the past. Prayer*

Prayer*

Seventh Day

Saint Philomena was powerfully aided by God in her combats. God will help us in our temptations and difficulties if we ask. He will send Jesus Himself, in the arms of His mother, Mary – the holy angels – and the Spirit of Strength, into our hearts that we might conquer all of His enemies and our own selves. Though I shall see whole legions united against me, I will still hope. Saint Philomena passed with fearless courage through torments and death. Am I not God’s child? Will God not do for me what He did for Saint Philomena? Alas, why do I have such doubts, why do I fear to be abandoned? Has not God said: “Ask and you shall receive?” Do I believe that morning after morning God gives me His own Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist, and then fail to trust and hope in Him when I ask a small Favor? Away then with these unjust fears! In my tribulations I will call upon God with unshaken confidence. 0, holy protectress, Saint Philomena, strengthen me in sentiments. Beg God today for every grace you need to attain eternal salvation and Be At Peace. Prayer*

Prayer*

Eighth Day

Saint Philomena withstood the attacks made upon her. It was death to self on the battlefield that procured for her eternal blessedness. She overcame shame and suffering; both of which united in vain subdue her. Glory covers her like a garment. Raise thy voice, illustrious martyr! Reproach now thy proud enemies. What become of their sting! Saint Philomena died and now she lives; was conquered and now she triumphs; she was dragged to scaffold and now, behold, she is glorified in heaven! Humiliation is the forerunner of glory; the cross our pledge of eternal happiness. Have I comprehended this? Do I wish to come to the practice of it’ If I had to engage the most terrible enemies and offer myself in combat of blood, how long would I last? What sort of fight would it be? A moment, a slight contest, almost nothing; and then, a weigh of glory and a boundless eternity of beatitude and happiness! 0 my heart, expand thyself at this hope. Not only will this make m resigned in my different trials, but I will carry them with joy. Let my tears flow since to them is promised so valuable a consolation. Sorrows avoid me not, as after you the sweetest joys will come! Yes I desire to suffer in order to enjoy; I wish to fight, in order t conquer. I wish to humble myself and to be humbled, that my Go may exalt me; I wish to die to the world, to sin and to myself, that may live in God and with God for all eternity.

Saint Philomena draw me after you and aid me by thy intercession. Animate an enlighten me by your example. Obtain for me the grace to follow ii Make the sacrifice today of one meal or at least a cup of water when you are hungry or thirsty. Mortify your flesh in some small way in reparation for choosing self in place of God so often in the past an’ in preparation for death. Prayer*

Prayer*

Ninth Day

Saint Philomena is the New Light of the Church Militant. She exercises today a glorious apostolate. The works of the just do not perish, they are seeds that remain buried for a time. The winter I is past. The lovely brilliancy of her virtue we behold and proclaim. come, 0 holy and dearly beloved soul! Take thy place in the midst of us. God shows forth His gratitude by a marked abundance new graces through thy intercession; a dew, as it were, of visible and invisible benedictions. Are not thy merits still living, though many ages have passed? What has Saint Philomena done to acquire glory? She has loved justice and hated iniquity. Her heart, d with love for the “Law of God,” was fed with it day and night. Everything she undertook was crowned with success. Let me begin last to follow her. I will now set about sowing my ground with acts of virtue. The more abundant the seed, the greater will be the harvest. I will endeavour to obtain the treasures of piety, patience, charity, and obedience and of all Christian virtues. I will seek only God in my actions. I will not let any opportunity for grace be ignored.

With thy help, O Princess of Paradise, Virgin and Martyr, I will amass treasures for the Church Suffering, the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant! What I do for God, I do for myself, for the angels, for the saints, for the just and for sinners. Let me make haste; let me not lose a moment. Aid me, O Saint Philomena, be my anchor of Hope. Thou who has been given the most glorious title of PATRONESS OF THE CHILDREN OF MARY by Pope Pius IX, obtain for me a tender and true devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

“0 faithful Virgin, and glorious Martyr, whose faith triumphed over all the attacks of the world and of hell, I bless God for thy triumphs; I praise Him and I give Him glory for the victorious strength He communicated to thee. Blessed be thou, O holy God! O God admirable in thy saints! O just God! O powerful God! O God of infinite mercy. AMEN.”

Prayer*

For Victory over Temptation

O God, who dost sustain us by the merits and example of the blessed Philomena, Virgin and Martyr, merciful grant that, strengthened in faith and charity, we may never be separated from Thee by any temptation. Through Christ our Lord.

For a Special Request

(suitable for a novena)

Illustrious Virgin and Martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me kneeling in spirit before the throne on which it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I beseech thee to intercede for me with God. From the height of thy heavenly country, deign to cast a look upon thy humble servant. Servant of Jesus Christ, console me in my troubles, strengthen me in temptations, protect me in my troubles, strengthen me in temptations, protect me in dangers which surround me on every side: obtain all the graces necessary for me, especially (here mention your particular intention), and, above all, assist me at my death. Amen.

For Growth in Virtues

O glorious Virgin! Whose glory God has been pleased to make known by singular miracles, we address ourselves to thee with entire confidence. Obtain for us that, flowing thy example, we may fight courageously against whatever is opposed to the reign of Jesus Christ in our heart; that we may adorn our souls with virtues like thine, particularly with that angelical purity of which thou art the perfect model; and that, inflamed with the love of Jesus, we may continually walk in the way which He has marked out, to the end that we may one day partake of thy everlasting happiness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns one God in perfect Trinity, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Purity

O glorious St. Philomena, who animated by a burning love for Jesus our Savior, didst shine in Holy Church by the splendour of perfect virginity and the practice of the most heroic virtues, obtain for us of thy Divine Spouse the grace to keep ever unsullied the precious treasure of chastity and to practice with generosity the virtues of our state, that having, after thy example, walked in His footsteps during our life on earth, we may, with thee, rejoice in His glory through all eternity. St. Philomena, happy virgin, adorned with all the charm of innocence, and beautified, besides, with the purple of martyrdom, obtain for us the grace to know how to suffer all, and to sacrifice all in order to be faithful to God till death and possess Him eternally in paradise.

For Detachment from Earthy Goods

O St. Philomena, faithful virgin and glorious martyr, who so courageously preferred to the visible good of this world the invisible goods of holy eternity, obtain for us a lively faith, an ardent charity and a piety always increasing, in order that, faithfully serving our Lord Jesus Christ during our life, we may merit after our death the happiness of contemplating Him face to face in life eternal. Amen.

Prayer in Affliction

O glorious Virgin and Martyr, beloved of God blessed Philomena, I heartily rejoiced in thy glory, and give thanks to God that He has given thee so much power, for the glory   of his Name, for the edification of His Church, and for the honour of the merits of thy life and of thy death.  I rejoice to see thee so great, so pure, so faithful to Jesus Christ and to the precepts and counsels of His Gospels, and so munificently rewarded by Him both in heaven and on Earth.

Attracted by thy example to the practice of solid virtue, filled with hope at sight of the rewards bestowed on thee I resolve to imitate thee in the avoidance of all evil, and in the fulfilment of God’s holy will. Assist me, O glorious little saint, by thy powerful intercession, and obtain for me especially a perfect purity, a fortitude invincible in all sorts of attacks, a generosity which refuses nothing to God , a love stronger than death for the one true Faith, and a ready and willing obedience to the Holy Catholic Church, and to our Sovereign Pontiff, the common Father of all the faithful, the Pastor of pastors and of their flocks, the Vicegerent of Jesus Christ throughout the universe.

Beside these favours which I have now asked through thy intercession, O blessed Philomena, I also ask an additional favour which I have the fullest confidence of obtaining through thy powerful intercession (here mention your request , with simplicity , confidence and humility). Surly, God, who is so good, and for whom thou has given up thy life; God, who is so good, and who has

St. Philomena, pray for us. (Three times.)

Pardon my boldness and bless me. May there be established between thee and me a current of warm and everlasting affection and friendship! I will never forget thee, my sweet Advocate. And do thou remember me, that I may be thy companion forever in Paradise. Amen.

Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good-will.  We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we adore Thee, we glorify Thee.  We give Thee thanks for Thy great glory, O Lord God, Heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.  O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.  Thou Who takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayers.  Thou Who sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.  For Thou only, art Holy.  Thou only art the Lord.  Thou only, O Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, art most high in the Glory of God the Father.

  1. The Lord be with you,
  2. And with thy spirit.

COLLECT.  O God, Who amongst other miracles of Thy power, hast given even to the weaker sex the victory of martyrdom, mercifully grant that we, who celebrate the birthday to Heaven of Blessed Philomena, thy Virgin and Martyr, may be following her example, advance nearer to Thee.  Through Christ Our Lord.

  1. Amen.

LESSON, Eccles. 4.1,8.  “I will give glory to Thee O Lord, my King, and I will praise Thee, O God, my Saviour.  I will give glory to Thy name, for Thou hast been a helper and protector to me, and hast preserved my body from destruction, from the snare of an unjust tongue, and from the lips of them that forge lies, and in sight of them that stood by, Thou hast been m helper.  And Thou hast delivered me from the roaring lions that were ready to devour me, according to the multitude of the mercy of Thy name.  Out of the hands of them that sought my life, and from the gates of afflictions which compassed about me: from the oppression of the flame which surrounded me, and in the midst of the fire I was not burnt.  From the depth of the belly of Hell and from an unclean tongue, and from lying words, from an unjust king and from a slanderous tongue:  my soul shall praise the Lord even to death, because thou succors those that trust in Thee, and delivers them from the hands of the Gentiles, O Lord our God.

  1. Thanks be to God.
  2. GRADUAL. Thou has loved justice and hated iniquity. V. Therefore, God, they God, hath anointed the with the oil of gladness.  Alleluia, Alleluia. V. After her shall virgins be brought to the King; her neighbours shall be brought to Thee with gladness.  Alleluia
  3. Cleanse m heart and my lips, O Almighty God, Who didst cleanse the lips of Isaiah with a burning coal:  and vouchsafe through Thy gracious mercy so to purify me that I may worthily proclaim Thy holy Gospel.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
  4. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.
  5. the beginning of the Holy Gospel, according to Saint Matthew. R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

GOSPEL. Matthew xxv. 1-13.  At that time: Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The Kingdom of Heaven shall be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride.  And five of them were foolish, and five wise.  But the five foolish having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them; but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.  And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept.  And at midnight there was a cry made:  “Behold the bridegroom cometh.  Go ye forth to meet him.”  Then all the virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.  And the foolish said to the wise: “Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out.”  The wise answered saying: “Lest perhaps there be not enough for you and for us, go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.”  Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready, went with him to the marriage and the door was shut.  But at last came also the other virgins, saying: “Lord, Lord, open to us.”  But he answered, saying: “Amen, I say to you, I know you not.  Watch ye, therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.”  R. Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

  1. The Lord be with you.
  2. And with thy spirit.

OFFERT. Ps. xliv. After her shall virgins be brought to the King: her neighbours shall be brought to thee with gladness and rejoicing.  They shall be brought into the temple to the Lord the King.

[Holding up the Paten and Host.]

  1. Accept.  O Holy Father, almighty, eternal God, this unstained Host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, for my innumerable sins, offences and negligence’s, and for all here present; as also for all the faithful Christians both living and dead, that it may be profitable for my own and their salvation unto life eternal.  Amen.

[Then he takes wine and water, blessing the water.]

O God  Who, in creating human nature, didst wonderfully dignify it; and hast still more wonderfully renewed it; grant that by the mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divinity, who vouchsafed to become partaker of our humanity. Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, Who lived and reigned with Thee in the unity, etc.

OFFERNIG. We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that in the sight of Thy divine Majesty, it may ascend with the odor of sweetness, for our salvation and for that of the whole world.  Amen.

In the spirit of humility and with ta contrite heart, let us be received by Thee, O Lord; and grant that the sacrifice we offer in Thy sight this day may be pleasing to Thee O Lord God.

Come, O sanctifier, almighty, eternal God, and bless this sacrifice prepared to Thy Holy Name.

[He now washes his fingers.]

Ps. xxv.  I will wash my hands among the innocent: and will encompass Thy altar O Lord.

That I may hear the voice of praise, and tell of all Thy marvelous works.

I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy house, and the place where Thy glory dwelleth.

Take not away my soul, O Food, with the wicked, nor my life with bloody men.

In whose hands are iniquities: their right hand is filled with gifts.

As for me, I have walked in my innocence: redeem me and have mercy on me.

My foot hath stood in the right path: in the churches I will bless Thee, O Lord.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

[Bowing in middle of Altar, he says:]

Receive, O Holy Trinity, this oblation, which we make to Thee in memory of the Passion, Resurrection and Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honour of the Blessed Mary, every Virgin, of Blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of these and of all the Saints: that it may be available to their honour and our salvation: and may they vouchsafe to intercede for us in Heaven, whose memory we celebrate on earth, through the same Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

  1. Brethren, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty.
  2. May the Lord receive the sacrifice from thy hands to the praise and glory of His Name, to our benefit, and to that of all His Holy Church.

SECRET PRAYER.

Receive, O Lord, the offerings we bring on the solemnity of Blessed Philomena: Thy Virgin and martyr, by whose intercession we hope to be delivered.  Through the same, etc.

  1. World without end.
  2. Amen.
  3. The Lord be with you.
  4. And with thy spirit.
  5. Lift up your heart.
  6. We have raised them to God.
  7. Let us return thanks to the Lord our God.
  8. It is meet and just.
  9. It is truly meet and just, right and salutary that we should always and in all places give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Eternal God, through Christ our Lord, through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the dominations adore it, the powers hold it is awe; the Heavens and the virtues of the Heavens, and the Blessed Seraphim to celebrate it with united joy.  In union with whom, we beseech Thee that Thou wouldst command our voices also to be admitted with suppliant confession, saying: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth.  Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.  Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest.

CANON OF THE MASS.

We, therefore, humbly pray and beseech Thee, most merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to accept and bless gifts which in the first we offer Thee for Thy Holy Catholic Church, to which vouchsafe to grant peace; as also to protect, unite and govern it throughout the world, with Thy servant our Pope (N), our Bishop (N), as also all orthodox believers and professors of the Catholic and Apostolic Faith.

COMMEMORATION OF THE LIVING.

Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy servants, men and women (N. and N.), and of all here present, whose faith and devotion are known unto Thee; for whom we offer, or who offer up to Thee this and friends for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their safety and salvation, and who pay their vows to Thee, the Eternal , Living, and True God.

Communicating with and honouring in the first place the memory of the glorious and ever Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, as also of the Blessed Apostles, Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Mathew, Simon and Thaddeus, Linus, Cletus, Clement, Xystus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysolgonus, John and aul, Cosmas and Damian, and of all Thy Saints by whose merits and prayers grant that we may be always defended by the help of Thy protection.  Through the same Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

We, therefore, beseech Thee, O Lord, graciously to accept this oblation of our service, as also of our whole family; dispose our days in Thy peace; command us to be delivered from eternal damnation and to be numbered in the flock of Thy elect.  Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

Which oblation do Thou, O God, vouchsafe in all things to make blessed approved, ratified, reasonable, and acceptable, that it may become to us the Body and Blood of Thy most beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Who the day before He suffered took bread into His holy Hands, and with His eyes lifted up to Heaven, to God, His Almighty Father, giving thanks to Thee, did bless, break, and give to His disciples, saying: Take and eat ye all of this: “For This is My Body.”

“THE ELEVATION.”

In like manner, having supped, taking also this excellent chalice in His holy and venerable Hands, and giving Thee thanks, He blessed and gave to His disciples, saying: Take and drink ye all of this: For This is the Chalice of M Blood of The New and Eternal Testament; The Mystery of Faith; which shall be shed for You, and for Many, to the Remission of sins.

As often as ye do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance of Me.

“THE ELEVATION OF THE CHALICE.”

Wherefore, O Lord, we Thy servants, as also Thy holy people, calling to mind the Blessed Passion of the same Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, His Resurrection from hell and glorious Ascension into Heaven, offer unto Thy most excellent Majesty of Thy gifts and presents, a pure Host, a Holy Host, and immaculate Host, the holy bread of eternal life, and the chalice of everlasting life.

Upon which vouchsafe to look with a serene and propitious countenance, and to accept them, as Thou wert graciously pleased to accept the gifts of Thy jus servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and that which Thy high priest Melchisedich offered to Thee, a holy sacrifice, an immaculate Host.

We most humbly beseech Thee, Almighty God, command these things to be carried by the hands of Thy holy angel to Thy Altar on high, in the sight of Thy Divine Majesty, that as many of us as by participation at this Altar shall receive the Most Sacred Body and Blood of Thy Son, may be filled with all heavenly benediction and grace.  Through the same Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy servants and handmaids (N. and N.). who are gone before us, with the sign of faith, and sleep in the sleep of peace.

To these, O Lord, and to all the rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of rest, light and peace.  Through the same Christ, Our Lord.  Amen.

And to us sinners, Thy servants, trusting in the multitude of Thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with Thy holy Apostles and Martyrs; with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecily, Anastatia, and with all Thy Saints into  whose company, we beseech Thee, to admit us, not considering our merit, but freely pardoning our offences.  Through Christ Our Lord.

By whom, O Lord, Thou dost always create, sanctify, quicken bless, and give us all these delights.  Through Him and with Him and in Him is to Thee, God the Father, Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory.  P. For ever and ever. R. Amen.

Instructed by Thy saving precepts, and following Thy Divine institution, we presume to say: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation.

  1. But deliver us from evil.  R. Amen.

Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils, past present, and to come; and by the intercession of the Blessed and Glorious Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of God, together with Thy Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and Andrew and all the Saints, mercifully grant peace in our days, that by the assistance of Thy mercy we may be always free from sin and secure from all disturbance.  Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Who lived and reigned with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

  1. World without end. R. Amen.
  2. May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
  3. And thy spirit.

May this mixing and consecration of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ be to us that receive it effectual to eternal life.  Amen.

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.  Lamb of God, etc.  Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who sadist to Thy Apostles, I leave you My peace, I give you my peace, regard not my sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and grant her that peace and unity which is agreeable to Thy will; Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.  Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, Who, according to the will of Thy Father, hast by Thy death, through the co-operation of the Holy Spirit, given life to the world, deliver me by this, Thy most Sacred Body and Blood from all my iniquities, and from all evils; make me always adhere to Thy Commandments and never suffer me to be separated from Thee; Who lives and reigns, etc.  Amen.  Let not the participation of Thy Body, O Lord Jesus Christ, which I, though unworthy, presume to receive, turn to my judgment and condemnation:  but through Thy mercy may it be safeguard and remedy both to soul and body, Who with God the Father lives and reigns, etc.  Amen.

I will take the bread of Heaven and call upon the Name of the Lord.

Lord, I am not worth that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; say only the Word, and my soul shall be cleaned.  (Thrice.)

May the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul to life everlasting.  Amen.

What return shall I make to the Lord for all He has given to me?  I will accept the chalice of salvation and call upon the Name of the Lord.  Praising, I will call upon the Lord and shall be saved from my enemies.  (He receives the chalice.)  The Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul to everlasting life.  Amen.

[The follows the Communion of the Faithful.]

AT THE ABLUTIONS.

Grant, Lord, that what we have taken with our mouth we may receive with a pure mind; and of a temporal gift may it become to us an eternal remedy.

May Thy Body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk, cleave to m vitals; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, who has been refreshed with pure and holy Sacraments, Who lives and reigns, etc.  Amen.
